WHY SHOULD YOU BECOME A SWIM OFFICIAL?

It’s the best “seat” in the house!

MAY swimmers attend both YMCA Swimming meets and USA Swimming meets.  Officials at YMCA meets are required to be certified YMCA officials and officials at USA Swimming are required to be USA Swimming certified.  Although YMCA Swimming adopted the USA Swimming technical rules on September 1, 2006 USA Swimming certified officials will not automatically become YMCA officials nor vice versa.

YMCA Officials

You will need to attend a YMCA official’s certification clinic. Take the test (open book) and get on deck as much as possible for experience.  Recertify every three years.   Starting in the 2007/08 season, YMCA officials are certified on two levels:

Current YMCA officials will be grandfathered into YMCA Level II officials.

Current YMCA officials who are coming up to the end of their certification period will take the Level II course and use a shorter Level II recertification test

Certification will remain at 3 years, but each level will be required to officiate at least 12 sessions within the three years (Up to six USA sessions will count for those officials that are dual certified).

New officials (who are not USA certified) are required to start at Level I.  They can move to level II certification after 1 year and a minimum of 8 worked sessions.

A list of upcoming Officials classes in 2007 can be found at www.ymcacompetitiveswim.org - left hand menu, menu option Official Classes under For YMCA Officials or by following this link: YMCA Officials training

Two clinics are planned at the Madison YMCA (please reserve a seat with the instructors, Peter Madley or Brian Keating, ASAP):

1.       October 8th (6:30 PM) – Madison YMCA – Level II –  Peter Madley & Brian Keating (navypilet@att.net)

2.     October 9th (6:30 PM) - Madison YMCA – Level I – Peter Madley & Brian Keating  (navypilet@att.net)

You are also welcome to attend any of the other clinics.  Here is a list of all the YMCA officials’ clinics (as of September 14th).  Please contact the instructor at least three days in advance to reserve a seat:

USA Swimming Official

You will need to attend a NJ Swimming certification clinic followed by a test (open book).  Once you pass the test, if you are an experienced YMCA Official, you will become a USA Level 5 (Stroke and Turn Official).  If you are new to officiating, you will be an Apprentice S & T (stroke and turn) official and must complete on deck mentoring for 5 meets before certification as a Level 5 S & T official.  Recertification is every two years.

Click on the link below for the OFFICIALS page on USA Swimming New Jersey Swimming.  You will be able to find requirements, clinics and other useful information here: http://www.njswim.org/njswimmingofficials.html

New S&T candidates will attend classes designated as New S&T while existing S&T officials will attend the re-certifying S&T courses.

Re-certifying starters will attend the re-certifying S&T classes.

New Starters will have their clinics conducted at an intra-squad or club dual meet.  New starter candidates must be sponsored by a NJS starter or referee.

The following clinics have been scheduled. Officials and new candidates must pre-register with the instructor since space is limited.  Kindly contact the listed instructor if you are planning to attend a clinic.
